Abbreviations

US terms: ch = chain; dc = double crochet; sc = single crochet; sl st = slip stitch; st = stitch; sts = stitches.

Pattern instructions

Row 1: Form the tip

Ch 4. Work 2 dc into the fourth ch from the hook. The starting ch-3 counts as one dc, giving you 3 dc in total.

Row 2

Ch 3 and turn; the ch-3 counts as the first dc. Work 1 dc into the same first stitch, then 1 dc in each stitch across until the last stitch. Work 2 dc into the last stitch. (5 dc total)

Row 3 and following rows

Ch 3 and turn. Work 1 dc into the same first stitch, dc in each stitch across to the last stitch, then work 2 dc in the last stitch. Repeat this row, increasing by 2 dc every row until the triangle fits comfortably and reaches the coverage you want.

Add a scalloped border

Ch 1 and work sc evenly around the triangle. Place 3 sc in each corner to help the edge lie flat. Join with a sl st to the first sc.

For the next round, create a shell effect by repeating: skip the next sc, work 5 dc in the following sc, skip the next sc, then sl st in the next sc. Continue around, making small adjustments at corners if needed so the border lies flat. If the edge begins to ruffle too much, use fewer stitches in each shell or leave a little more space between shells.

Make the ties

Join yarn to one of the two corners along the wide edge. Ch 40–50, sl st back along the chain, and fasten off. Repeat at the opposite corner. Change the tie length for a snug or more relaxed fit.

Finishing tips

Weave in the loose ends and block the kerchief gently according to the yarn label. Blocking can help open up the stitches and define the scalloped border. Use a breathable yarn and avoid making the fabric too dense if you plan to wear it in hot weather.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a different yarn weight?

Yes, but the finished size and drape will change. Make a small sample first and use the hook recommended for your yarn.

What if the scallops do not lie flat?

Try reducing the number of dc in each shell or spacing the shells farther apart. The best spacing depends on your yarn, hook, and stitch tension.
